More Than Conquerors
October 2003 Special Issue

This past summer I graduated from college. As I was thinking about the past four years, I wrote several poems to reflect some of my thoughts. So many people have blessed me over the years. Here are some of the poems I wrote during that time, and one extra one written by Joan Clifton Costner.

Please feel free to share any of the poems I wrote with anyone who has touched your life.

When You Came Into My Life
Dedicated to the Fenstemaker family,
who have blessed me in so many ways as I’ve gotten to know them

When you came into my life:
It was like a new star
Was added to the night
Giving another sparkle
To the great cascade of light

When you opened up your soul:
It was like a color
Was given unto art
Adding a splash to life
That reaches into the heart

When you declared your friendship:
A song began that day
Two flutes in harmony
Weaving a celestial tune
Of all that was meant to be

Thank You For Walking With Me
For all who have encouraged and prayed for me over the years…

I passed another mark in life;
Observers shouted out a cheer—
But I could not have made it
Without you always being near.

God is opening doors for me,
Showing me the paths I should go;
But I doubt I could walk them
If your love I did not know.

Thank you for walking with me,
Thank you for giving your hand
When I had not faith to see;

Thank you for the many prayers,
And when my heart was broken,
Thank you for the times you cared.

Open Door

You could have painted a picture of our smiles
We would have surpassed Mona Lisa—
And I believed that “friends forever”
Was more than a fanciful idea…

The door between us was always open,
You were always welcome in my heart—
I have never understood the click
That closed the door when you chose to depart

But I want you to know I’m here for you,
For though it hurt when you left back then,
I still believe in friends forever
And have opened the door to my heart again!

Thank You For The Memories

I remember when we were kids—
It doesn’t seem too long ago—
We had good times together,
A good friendship began to grow!

I remember running with you,
And all the laughs and smiles we shared—
None of the times by myself
To the moments with you compared…

But yet, if I had a choice
I know I could not go back,
Because I’ve learned so many things,
Where before I was in lack.

So today I look back with smiles,
And thank you for the times we had,
Then look forward to the future
With a heart prepared and glad;

And each moment, given by God,
With all of my life I will seize,
And after the moment is through
I’ll thank you for the memories.

There Are Those

There are those ...
Who have encouraged me
Through the pages of a book,
And others, with compassionate eyes,
Portrayed in just a look.

There are those...
Who, with a gentle touch,
Conveyed a Christian care.
I knew, without a word, my name
Would be mentioned in their prayer.

There are those ...
Who brought a word from God,
With Spirit revealed truth.
Along life’s path they’re sprinkled,
Way back from my youth.

I pray the world will always have
These warriors.  Though it seems,
These days, the road is weary
With long way in between.

When I look inside myself,
I hope that I have been
Someone used to encourage
And to be a special friend.

For, I’ve received such blessing!
To pass it on is good;
To be a faithful warrior like
Our Savior said we should.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or
nakedness or danger or sword?… No, in all these things
we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”
—Romans 8:35, 37
